HMRC Will be writing to 167,000 Employers for Missing RTI
There are approximately 167,000 employers who have missed more than one Real Time Information (RTI) return for Pay as You Earn (PAYE) income Tax. Therefore HM Revenue and Customs is in the process of writing to all of them. The reason some companies may not have filed a PAYE return is because their PAYE scheme is unused or is no longer in operation as they no longer have employees, in such cases the employers or their agents still need to let HMRC know by calling the tax body employers helpline. Also some employers should remember that they are required to operate a PAYE scheme for expenses and benefits, in which case they should either submit a nil Employer {payment Summary (EPS) each month, or they also have the option of calling HMRC and changing their scheme to annual reporting. From figures published by HMRC, over 85% of employers are now using the RTI, this is 1.6m employers PAYE schemes and over 40m individual records. The PAYE information have is being reported in the RIT, is also being used by the Department for Work and Pensions in a pathfinder pilot to calculate Universal Credit amounts paid to people in the northwest of England, to ensure that the amount of welfare received accurately reflects income level.
